This is my first season with the Mantis SwiftSplit. It's a great little splitter for Ash, Elm, some Walnut and other medium hardwoods. Don't expect it to handle hedge, hackberry, Oak, or other hardwoods. I still run into an occasional log that still needs to be split with my old 12 pounder and wedge.
When I first received the splitter, some of the wires became disconnected during uncrating. In trying to repair this problem, I noticed several items that were indicative of incorrect tooling (holes did not match up), sloppy wiring and crimping, loose screws, and poor grounding.
I needed to know what wire color codes were used to connect to various components as well as other wires. The owners manual did not have a wiring diagram. I was eventually able to get help via email on this problem, but a diagram should have been included in the manual.
After re-wiring the splitter, everything worked just fine for about 3 logs. Thereafter, the electric motor would run, but the hydraulic cylinder failed to move. Again, an email to Mantis solved the problem. The solution was to press a reset button on the solenoid valve located at the base of the cylinder. However, such information should also have been included in the operators manual.
All of the logs that I split are only 14" long (I have a Charter Oak parlor stove) - which is shorter than what the average user would want. Accordingly, the hydraulic cylinder must travel 7" before it contacts the wedge. An adjustable wedge would save me a lot of wait time.
I found that the wheeled cart design is handy for moving from the garage to the woodpile, but the vertical splitting position is not as stable as a horizontal one. I sometimes have to stop the cylinder movement (by releasing the power switches), rotate or reposition the log, then restart the cylinder because the log shifted during movement. An initial horizontal position would tend to be more stable.
I'm still happy with splitter. |
